Free and Open Source DJ Software: Mixxx
Do you like freedom? If the answer is yes, this post about free and open-source DJ software might be interesting for you, especially if you are a DJ or aspire to be one.
Imagine a world without the power of choice, where we only have one option. The ability to choose is fundamental in many aspects of life, including the software we use.
At this point, you may be thinking, “What is this guy talking about? I’m here to read about music…”
But the key word here is FREEDOM!
In life, as in software, it is very difficult when we have no choice. It could be the choice of which restaurant you want to go to, which profession you want to pursue, or even which tools you want to use for your DJ performances.
Using only one operating system or specific software from the manufacturer of your DJ equipment can be very difficult.
That’s where Mixxx comes in!
Mixxx is a free (as in freedom and price), open-source DJ software with no company behind it. It is developed by passionate DJs and programmers who dedicate their free time to creating a fantastic DJ software that respects your freedom.
In my particular case, I chose Mixxx because I love Linux and open-source software. Also, I bought a Pioneer DDJ FLX4 and tried using it first with Rekordbox on Windows via dual boot. The performance was horrible, and I really hate Windows. In the past, I used a Traktor controller on macOS. Of course, the performance was very good. In fact, for those who have used Traktor, it is very similar to Mixxx.
To practice this experience, I started a new session of simple DJ sets that I called “Instant Mix” You can listen to it if you wish:
If you are interested in trying Mixxx, you can follow the quick start guide.
Whatever your choice, Linux, macOS, or even Windows, have a great Mixxx!
See you in the next post.
